Ever since it was announced, I've been reading the handful of articles and reviews that have appeared on the web about this lens. But it was on backorder everywhere, and very few photographers seem to have been able to get their hands on one. So the other day, when I was ordering some accessories from B&H, and saw that it happened to be in stock, GAS got the best of me. It arrived yesterday, and I've had a chance to play with it at some of my favorite shooting spots.

I am very impressed. It's sharp at f/2.8 all the way to the corners. And when I compared it to my Sony 16–35mm f/4, well, that lens is going up on eBay tomorrow. I've put up a short comparo thread here.

There's no Lightroom lens profile for it yet, so I just used the Sigma 14–24 DG HSM profile intended for the previous iteration of this lens for Canon and Nikon cameras. It seems close enough to me, though I did detect some mustache distortion when doing the brick wall test (which I won't bore you with). But it seems well-suited for architecture and interiors.

Its flare is well-controlled, and it gives a nice sun star at f/16.

Its bokeh is a little busy, but doesn't show any cat's eyes or onion skin artifacts.

Having that extra 2mm over the Sony 16–35mm is welcome, and the 24mm far end butts up nicely against my Sony 24–105mm lens.

I've read that it is ideal for Astro/Milky Way photography. And I look forward to the next new moon to test that out too.

At 795 grams it's no lightweight. But this lens is stellar, and I bet I'll be happy to have it in my bag.

My first attempt at a Milky Way shot with this lens.
