Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for APS-C E-mount

I just heard of this lens and read some nice reviews. I’ve seen a couple of mentions on this forum but there are no threads dedicated to it so I‘ll create this one.

At least two forum members have it. How’s it working for you? Do focusing and stabilization work as smoothly as on native Sony lenses?

It would be a great companion to the Sony SEL70350G. Both lenses take 67mm filters and are similar form factor and weight:

Tamron 17-70 (D x L) 74.6mm x 119.3mm 525g

Sony 70-350 (D X L) 77mm x 142mm 625g

With those two zooms and a few manual primes I wouldn’t need much else.

The Tamron 70-300 might also be a good companion for the 17-70, but only for a camera with IBIS, since it lacks stabilization. It’s surprisingly light weight for a full frame telephoto.

The Tamron 17-70 and Sony 70-350 even have the same zoom and focus ring arrangement.

My pair is all-Tamron: 17-70 and 70-180.

I used to keep my Sigma 30/1.4 on the camera for grab-it-and-snapshots. At that time I didn't have any zooms, except for the 55-210, which I mostly forgot about, even though it will take a decent pic in good light. Now I keep the 17-70, for flexibility and convenience.

These lenses have sparked some collectability-GAS: I quite fancy owning the wider one and the longer one too. Filed under wouldn't-it-be-nice. Under wouldn't-it-be-useful, there are other lenses to buy first, like a fast 135 prime.
